
Originally from Brazil, Dr. Nairam Simoes enjoys a multifaceted international career as a performer, music educator, and clinician with a wealth of knowledge particularly in chamber and Brazilian music. He is the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Arkansas State University. Prior to his appointment at A-State, he served as trumpet faculty at Lamar University and Texas A&M-Kingsville. In addition to his teaching duties, he is the editor of the Orchestra Section Profile column for the International Trumpet Guild Journal.
As an active performer, he has played with the Memphis
Symphony Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Symphony of Southeast Texas, Dayton Philharmonic, Lexington Philharmonic, Springfield Symphony, Kentucky Symphony and for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He has been a featured soloist with the Arkansas Musicworks Brass Band at the Arkansas Bandmasters Association Convention in Fort Smith, AR and with Lamar University Symphonic Band, the Joao Pessoa City Band, Paraiba Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles. As a cornetist, he performs with the internationally acclaimed British-style brass band in Kansas City - Fountain City Brass Band (FCBB) and placed first in the 2022 Northern American Brass Band Championship (NABBA) in Huntsville, AL.
Dr. Simoes has presented masterclasses all across the United States and in South America including the University of North Texas, Colorado State University, Utah University, Stephen F. Austin State University, University of New Mexico, University of Campinas in São Paulo and many other institutions. He was a featured artist for the 2022 and 2021 International Trumpet Guild Conference, faculty for the 2022 University of Kentucky Summer Trumpet Institute, 2019 Brazilian Trumpet Conference, 35th Winter International Music Festival of Santa Maria, the 2021 and 2016 Campina Grande International Music Festival in Paraíba (Brazil)and presented a recital at the 2021 International Horn Symposium. He was an adjudicator for TMEA, KMEA and WTSBOA. Dr. Simoes has also been actively involved with the National Trumpet Competition, he chaired the High School Division of the 2022 and 2021 editions and was in the judging panel of the Undergraduate division for the 2022 in Newark, DE.
Throughout his career he has commissioned and premiered several new works that includes trumpet. In 2022 Dr. Simoes released an album through the label Fundamental Sounds titled “Braziliana.” The album showcases works for an unusual chamber music formation: trumpet, French horn and piano with the Arkansas based chamber group NordesTrio. The recording featured commissions from acclaimed Brazilian composers. He has also commissioned pieces by many American composers, such as Eric Ewazen from the Julliard School.
Dr. Simoes holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Memphis. His primary teachers included Alan Siebert, Phil Collins, Eric Berlin, David Spencer, Kyle Millsap, Scott Moore, Marie Speziale, Jim Pandolfi, and Charles Schlueter.
